Adam and Joey, first indoor track meet
Adam and Joey had their first track meet of the
indoor season yesterday. The crazy thing is that it is called indoor track
because it is winter and it is supposed to be held indoors, but there are no
indoor tracks so it is held outside in the cold. These track kids are
amazing. They train all week after school until 6:30 then get up on a
Sat., ride a bus for an hour and spend all day doing track events. They
bring tents to stay in and lots of food for the day. They cheer each other
on when they are not doing an event of thier own. Well enough of all
that.
Joey was in two events. He did great. He ran the 500
meter. He did a very respectable job. He was in the middle of the
finish standings. He will be the first to tell you he is not a runner, but
he keeps at it. Joey also did the shot put. He had only one day of
training as it was a last minute decision. He did a good job at that as
well. He threw 27 feet 4 inches. That is excellent for a first time
thrower.
Adam was also in two events. Pole vaulting and the
500 meter. There was some good drama over Adam's events as during the pole
vaulting the 500 meter race was called. Pole vaulting takes some time as
each vaulter get 3 trys to get over a certain height. If you make it over
them you move up to the next height by increments of 6 inches. Well Adam
and the state/national champion were the only two left. Adam had just made
it over 11 feet qualifying him for districts already. The other coach
comes running over telling him he needs to go run the 500. Adam looked at
him like he was crazy. After some haggling it is decided that he should go
run the 500 and then come back to vaulting. Hard to do when your in the
grove.
Adam not only runs the 500, but comes in for a photo finish for first
place. He unfortunately was seriously just a hair behind the other guy who
was thankfully one of our students.
During the time he was running, the
state/national pole vault champion from the other school decided to take his
trys at the pole. He missed getting over all three times so Adam won pole
vaulting. It is the first time anyone has ever beat the kid. His
name is Morrison. The track team said they were going to get Adam a shirt
that said I beat Morrison. Well that is how we spent our day
yesterday. Hope you are having a great weekend. Love Kathy
