Va. state pole vaulting championships here we come!
Comeau family update on indoor track for Adam.
There was an errie hush that came over the track arena when the height of the pole vaulting bar was put at 11 feet. Everyone knew this was not for the faint of heart. Each coach hoping his vaulter would be able to get over. Parents saying silent prayers for their sons. After all there were only 3 boys left. The first boy no one ever really gives a thought to except when he vaultes and to watch in awe, as he does not even start until 13 feet. No competition there. We already know he is the best. It's the other two kids that seem to capture everyone's attention. These guys are the guts of pole vaulting. It's not so easy for them. It is pure will power that will get them over.
The first boy is from Virginia Beach. He vaults and misses on the first attempt. There are groans. The second guy steps on the track. He is from Chesapeake. Tall, thin guy with his eye intent on getting over. He begins his run, you can here a pin drop. He increases his momentum. You can feel his coach running with him, and willing him up and over. He jabs the pole and goes sailing through the air clearing 11 feet, as if he had wings. Cheers from everyone The Va Bch fellow gets a second go at it and does make it on the second try. Now the bar goes up to 11ft 6in . This is the Chesapeake fellow's (Adam Comeau)personal best. Clearing 11ft 6in he has done, but it has come hard and can he go further? Yes he makes it over!!! Now for a school record, and a personal record . 12 ft. Coaches are now silent, I think praying. You can hear his brothers say hey dude you can do this. Same scenario, up up up??????? Oh my gosh he made it over. The stadium erupts. No big deal to Adam he has 6 inches to go to qualify for the state meet. No time for thinking of anything else. Well maybe this phone call from Dad who could not get off work and has been getting the play by play from Mom. Now back to business. Can he clear 12ft 6in? You bet! Adam Comeau is going to fairfax Va. to compete in the state pole vaulting championships. He set a school record and bettered his personal best by 1 ft.
