Kathy Rogers-Comeau turned 50 years young March 20Th, 2008.

Family and friends traveled distance and time, From the west, north and south and from decades past to the current. All came to show their love and support.

Kathy was clueless which is a sure sign she is slipping in her old age because normally she's a tough one to trick. After all she has 3 teenage boys which keep her on her toes. None the less...AMBUSH successful.

We had a beautiful banquet room on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront hosted by the world renowned Rockafellers restaurant. The fresh ocean breeze and scenic view was exceeded only by the spectacular dinner entrees, deserts and of course a wonderful home baked cake. The weather was perfect and spirits where high. We had a nice slide show honoring 5 decades of Kathy's life thus far. There where many gifts, lots of hugs, tears and cheers. It couldn't have been better.

Slide show

Party Photos

A Birthday Ambush

Today Tim and Dan where tricked and then ambushed with a surprise birthday celebration at Azeala Inn. One day Carol & Darryl wanted to see just how big their tract of land was. So, being the solution oriented person she is, Carol came up with this idea.

She found the tallest tree on the property and decided to climb to the top so she could survey all the land. So she started to climb the big tree. As she neared the top, she encountered a spotted owl that became spooked and attacked her. In her haste to escape, she slid down the tree to the ground very fast and got many splinters in her, eh'hem... private parts. In considerable pain, she hurried to the Garberville clinic to see the doctor. Being a tree hugger himself, the doctor listened to Carols' story with great patience and then told her to go into the examining room and he would see if he could help her. Now, no one is in a hurry in Humboldt country because they are all laid back on "Humboldt time". However, Carol sat and waited for three hours before the doctor reappeared. At this point she was very frustrated and demanded, What took you so long? He apologized for taking so long and then told her, "I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a recreational area!!! No biggie, it's right there next to mine and it goes to the same place. I used to take it in every week, but then one day I noticed the man who lives there drag his trash can right past me without saying anything. Maybe he didn't know or didn't care. None the less, after that I stopped bringing in his trash can as often...
Then one day, out of the blue, this beautiful little girl about 9 years old, came up to me and asked, " scuse me sir, are you the person who has been bringing in our trash can?" I said " why yes, that would be me." Well, she said, I just wanted to thank you, because all this time we thought it was a ghost. . .
Later on that day I received a knock at the door. It was my little neighbor friend. She was nervously anxious as she proclaimed she had something for me. Then she handed me this beautiful hand made thank you card. A wonderful "work of heart". I noticed her kind eyes seeking confirmation in mine, that her gesture of kindness pleased me. As I thanked her from my heart, her nervousness melted, and as she skipped away, pleased with her deed of kindness.
It was a wonderful reminder to me that though you may not receive immediate gratification, it is human nature to deed kindness. So keep on being human and offering kindness because sooner or later it will be noticed and acknowledged when you least expect it and in the sweetest of ways.

New photo Album

Hi everyone, This is just an announcement to let you know that a new photo album was posted at my gallery site for school photos. First let me clarify that the name Rogers Family Blog is just a title for the blog. Just because your surname does not match, does not mean that your are not a welcomed member of the family blog. No more than it would mean you are not a member of the family. Having said this, I will further explain that the author of this blog is ROGERS which inadvertently had some influence on the title. The name ROGERS was also seemed a likely choice because the Rogers clan is the first and originating clan of the tribe where all subsequent clans have either infiltrated through marriage or some other means to benefit the advancement of their own clan. Though to this day, the Rogers clan remains the superior clan, we would be ungracious not to recognize the limited contributions of subordinate clans. Though they can be a depletive strain on the tribes mental and emotional resources, in the final equation, they are a benefit to the overall strength and wellbeing of the tribe as a whole. We are also sympathetic to the sacrifices and loss that the inferior clans have endured through the suffrage and defection from their alleged prior identities. Therefore we make no differentiation to those subsequent clans that have symbioticly established themselves as a permanent part of our tribe. They are all a welcomed PART of this family and of course, this blog. In support of this belief, I have decided change the name of this blog to THE GRAPEVINE.
Warm regards, Tribal Chief blogger

Va. state pole vaulting championships here we come!

Comeau family update on indoor track for Adam.

There was an errie hush that came over the track arena when the height of the pole vaulting bar was put at 11 feet. Everyone knew this was not for the faint of heart. Each coach hoping his vaulter would be able to get over. Parents saying silent prayers for their sons. After all there were only 3 boys left. The first boy no one ever really gives a thought to except when he vaultes and to watch in awe, as he does not even start until 13 feet. No competition there. We already know he is the best. It's the other two kids that seem to capture everyone's attention. These guys are the guts of pole vaulting. It's not so easy for them. It is pure will power that will get them over.
The first boy is from Virginia Beach. He vaults and misses on the first attempt. There are groans. The second guy steps on the track. He is from Chesapeake. Tall, thin guy with his eye intent on getting over. He begins his run, you can here a pin drop. He increases his momentum. You can feel his coach running with him, and willing him up and over. He jabs the pole and goes sailing through the air clearing 11 feet, as if he had wings. Cheers from everyone The Va Bch fellow gets a second go at it and does make it on the second try. Now the bar goes up to 11ft 6in . This is the Chesapeake fellow's (Adam Comeau)personal best. Clearing 11ft 6in he has done, but it has come hard and can he go further? Yes he makes it over!!! Now for a school record, and a personal record . 12 ft. Coaches are now silent, I think praying. You can hear his brothers say hey dude you can do this. Same scenario, up up up??????? Oh my gosh he made it over. The stadium erupts. No big deal to Adam he has 6 inches to go to qualify for the state meet. No time for thinking of anything else. Well maybe this phone call from Dad who could not get off work and has been getting the play by play from Mom. Now back to business. Can he clear 12ft 6in? You bet! Adam Comeau is going to fairfax Va. to compete in the state pole vaulting championships. He set a school record and bettered his personal best by 1 ft.

fun on the farm

Here is a photo of a friend of mine with 2 of my horses. Mostly this post is to announce photos taken at the track meet. The rest of them are posted here at the Comeau clan family album. Joey placed sixth throwing 31 ft 11 ins Very good for a first timer in his sophmore year. Most don't make it to districts their first time out. Other photos taken at same meet. I believe there is one of Adam and his girlfriend Kaelin waiting their turn for pole vaulting. They each qualified to go on to regionals. Well enough of all
that.

Joey was in two events. He did great. He ran the 500
meter. He did a very respectable job. He was in the middle of the
finish standings. He will be the first to tell you he is not a runner, but
he keeps at it. Joey also did the shot put. He had only one day of
training as it was a last minute decision. He did a good job at that as
well. He threw 27 feet 4 inches. That is excellent for a first time
thrower.

Adam was also in two events. Pole vaulting and the
500 meter. There was some good drama over Adam's events as during the pole
vaulting the 500 meter race was called. Pole vaulting takes some time as
each vaulter get 3 trys to get over a certain height. If you make it over
them you move up to the next height by increments of 6 inches. Well Adam
and the state/national champion were the only two left. Adam had just made
it over 11 feet qualifying him for districts already. The other coach
comes running over telling him he needs to go run the 500. Adam looked at
him like he was crazy. After some haggling it is decided that he should go
run the 500 and then come back to vaulting. Hard to do when your in the
grove.
Adam not only runs the 500, but comes in for a photo finish for first
place. He unfortunately was seriously just a hair behind the other guy who
was thankfully one of our students.
During the time he was running, the
state/national pole vault champion from the other school decided to take his
trys at the pole. He missed getting over all three times so Adam won pole
vaulting. It is the first time anyone has ever beat the kid. His
name is Morrison. The track team said they were going to get Adam a shirt
that said I beat Morrison. Well that is how we spent our day
yesterday. Hope you are having a great weekend. Love Kathy

Dan-isms

These are some of the wisdom I try to live by. By the time he reached the age of 19 the country was not only in the middle of the great depression it was in the middle of the great fiasco known as Prohibition. I mention this only because both had a profound effect on DOD.
(Dear old dad) He never graduated from High School. In fact he jumped out of the window of his eight grade class after a disagreement with the Mother Superior.
The classroom was on the second floor!. He never went back. Jobs were nonexistent due to the depression, until Roosevelt’s alphabet soup government came along, My Mother said that when I was born he was so happy that he had a son that he went out and got a job. He worked for the CCC, the Civil Conservation Corp. At some point he took a part time job driving a truck for some shady characters. He claimed that he was indirectly employed by Lucky Luchanio. And this was very possible. The Mob was all over Hudson. (For more insight into the nature of illegal activity in Hudson see "Diamond Street by Bruce Edward Hall) A radio commentator of the time would often say "A little town thirty miles south of Albany, the New York State capitol is wide open! And it was! This job was merely to go to Canada and bring back a load of whiskey. It was a dangerous occupation because being hijacked was always a possibility and the long arm of the law was a threat as well. He only made three trips, my mother made one with him. He developed his skills as a cook and took a job at a fancy restaurant in White Planes, New York. He also developed a love for alcohol and gambling. I remember him proclaiming to his brother John that there was an underground casino so close to our house that he "could throw the kitchen sink into the middle of it." John was the alderman of that district. Some time in 1939 My Mother and one of my sisters were diagnosed with tuberculosis They were taken away by force and inturned in a sanitarium I was six years old and had two more sisters younger than me. We were taken to live with my Dads mother. My Grandmother I didn’t realize it would be for thirteen years. I will never forget the day they took Mom away. Soon after Pearl Harbor pop enlisted in the navy. Because of his background he was made a cook and assigned to the Construction Battalion the C/B’S (SEABEES) This is where he picked up the nick-name Buck The comic strip "Buck Rogers" was very popular at that time. I don’t know of any battles in which he may have been involved So he went off to war. HE NEVER CAME BACK No! He wasn’t killed or even wounded. The word was that he spent a considerable amount of time in the Brig. Bucky was a tough guy and he would Fight any time, any place. Family gatherings, wedding, funeral or holiday all went the same way: Eat a lot, drink a lot, sing some Irish songs then fight then cry. When he heard his Brother Bill singing "When Irish eyes are smiling" it was as though someone had rung a bell to start the fight. He would seek out his brothers George and Joe to fight and even his Father but never his Brothers Bill, John, or James. He was discharged from the Navy with a ten percent disability. He always maintained that He couldn’t make a living in Hudson, and he was right. He went with a navy buddy to Bridgeport, CT. He landed a job with an aircraft company, machine parts division. Somehow he learned to use small hand measuring tools and was transferred to the Quality control section. About this time he met and married Marion Davenport. (My parents were divorced by this time) Marion was just the person Dad needed to tame his wild nature. They bought a house together in Stratford CT. and took in boarders. Meanwhile Marion continued to work as a waitress. Bucky began to operate a poker game in the basement of the house. The game would start early Friday evening and go on till Monday morning. People were coming and going all the time. He didn’t play very often. But he did deal every hand possible He would cut the pot. He took .25 or .50 cents and sometimes a dollar Out of every pot. My step mom would make sandwiches. And he always had plenty of beer and hard whisky available. Free of charge. Many of the town’s police force was regular players, including the chief. The firefighters were also in regular attendance. He loved Los Vegas and went often. He was known as mister R at the Hacienda hotel. He could win or lose five thousand dollars on any evening.
There are so many anecdotes that I could relate but this document is too long already. To sum up Dear Old Dad, was very human. He had character defects just like everyone else and he struggled with the disease of Alcoholism. If you could take James Cagney from one of his tough guy roles and cross him with Dean Martin you would have my Dad.

DOD WENT TO THE BIG CASINO IN THE SKY IN August of 1976

Rogers clan communication & geneology blog

Hi and welcome to Dan & Carols web blog.
